Ford Ranger PHEV Arrives in UK, Electrifying the Pick-Up Truck Segment
updated June 21, 2025
The Ford ranger, a dominant force in the European pick-up market, is getting an electrified makeover. While the U.S. sees the all-electric Ford Lightning battling Tesla’s Cybertruck, the UK welcomes the Ranger PHEV, a plug-in hybrid poised to redefine the segment. This new Ford Ranger PHEV blends traditional truck utility with modern electric efficiency.
With 80% of UK Ranger sales being the high-spec Wildtrak model, it’s clear buyers want more than just a workhorse. The Ranger PHEV answers this call, combining a 2.3-liter “Ecoboost” turbo petrol engine with a 75-kW electric motor. This powertrain, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, delivers versatility for both work and leisure.
The 11.8-kWh battery, positioned under the load bed, allows for an estimated 26 miles of electric-only driving. Charging takes approximately 2.5 hours on a 7-kW charger. Despite the battery placement, the Ranger PHEV maintains its 1-metric-ton payload capacity and can still accommodate a Euro pallet.
Drivers can select from multiple EV modes: EV Auto blends petrol and electric power, EV Now prioritizes electric driving, EV Later saves electric energy for later use, and EV Charge uses the petrol engine to recharge the battery. The Ford Ranger PHEV also retains existing driving modes like Normal, Eco, and mud/Ruts.
What’s next
The Ford Ranger PHEV represents a meaningful step toward electrification in the pick-up truck market. Its blend of power, efficiency, and versatility could influence future vehicle designs and consumer expectations.
