Foreign Agents Bill Meets Another Roadblock: MPs Deliver Second Blow to Controversial Legislation
Pro-Russian Party’s “Foreign Agents” Bill Rejected by Parliamentary Committee
The draft law proposed by the pro-Russian party “Vazrazhdane” for the registration of ”foreign agents” was rejected by the parliamentary committee on culture and media.
The bill was rejected with six votes against, two votes in favor, and two abstentions. It is unlikely that the bill will reach a vote in the plenary hall.
Opposition to the Bill
The leader of the party, Kostadin Kostadinov, announced that they will continue to present the bill in future parliaments “until it is passed”. However, the bill has been met with opposition from various parties, including GERB, PP-DB, and DPS-Peevski.
The European Commission has also criticized the bill, and businesses and trade unions have expressed their opposition to it.
Restrictions on Organizations and Media
The bill proposes that organizations that receive money from abroad be declared “foreign agents” and that their activities be restricted and even banned.
This would affect not only media and non-governmental organizations but also individuals with liberal professions who receive foreign funding, such as scientists, artists, and charity workers.
Concerns about Freedom of Speech and Association
Opponents of the bill have expressed concerns that it would restrict freedom of speech and association, and would brand certain individuals and organizations as “traitors” and “foreign agents”.
They have also pointed out that the bill is similar to a Russian law that has been used to restrict civil society and freedom of speech.
Debate and Controversy
The debate on the bill was marked by controversy and disputes, with some deputies accusing the party of trying to restrict civil society and freedom of speech.
The party has denied these allegations, claiming that the bill is necessary to protect national security and prevent foreign interference in Bulgarian affairs.
