(Gwangju = Yonhap News) Reporter Cheon Jeong-in = A foreign suspect who was taken to the police station on gambling charges escaped and is being pursued by the police.
According to the Gwangju Police Agency on the 31st, at around 1:15 am on this day, Mr. A, a Vietnamese national who was arrested on suspicion of illegal gambling, ran away from the entrance of the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station.
When the district police officer was about to put his arms around Mr. A, who was in the police car, to get him out, he pushed the police officer and ran away.
Mr. A was a migrant worker whose visa to stay in the country had expired, and was in handcuffs when he fled.
He escaped the police station through a passageway through which vehicles passed by avoiding the fence. It is presumed that he knew the surrounding geography well, as he chose a blind spot in the closed-circuit (CCTV) TV and chose an escape route.
The police are tracking Mr. A by identifying his expected escape route from those around him.
At 11:50 p.m. the previous day, Mr. A was gambling with 10 male and female foreigners of the same nationality at a house in Songjeong-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and was caught as a red-light criminal by the police who responded to a 112 call.
The police arrested all 11 people at the gambling site and mobilized several patrol cars to transport them to Gwangsan Police Station.
Excluding Mr. A, the remaining 10 people are currently being investigated on gambling charges.
On June 11, 2022, the Gwangsan Police Station experienced a situation where Vietnamese national suspects who had been arrested on gambling charges escaped during the basic investigation process.
At that time, 10 of the 23 suspects escaped through a narrow window while waiting in the district conference room without surveillance cameras, and were all arrested within a day.
The district unit that missed the suspect in front of the police station entrance on this day and the district unit where the mass escape occurred in 2022 are different government offices.
On the 16th, an illegal Thai citizen who was arrested as a suspect in an assault case at the Naju Police Station in Jeollanam-do was caught about 10 hours later after pushing a police officer and running away while getting out of a convoy vehicle.
