Foreign national contributors to the Spanish Social Security system reached a new record of 3.1 million during the first half of April 2026. This milestone occurs as Spain prepares to launch an extraordinary regularization process for more than half a million immigrants already residing in the country.

The increase in foreign labor is a significant driver of the Spanish job market. Foreign workers accounted for 25% of all employment contracts signed in 2025, with the number of contracts signed by foreign nationals growing by 7%.

Growth Trends in Foreign Employment

The surge in foreign affiliation has been a sustained trend throughout 2025. In December 2025, the Social Security system recorded 3,135,581 foreign workers affiliated after discounting seasonal and calendar effects.

This December 2025 figure represented a growth of nearly one million more workers than in December 2019 and more than 800,000 additional affiliates compared to the period prior to the labor reform.

Foreign workers now represent 14.1% of all contributors to the Social Security system, an increase of six-tenths of a percentage point compared to the previous year.

Regional and Demographic Impact

The growth of foreign contributors is particularly pronounced in regions with higher average populations. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the autonomous communities leading this growth include:

  • Asturias: 21.7% growth
  • Galicia: 15.5% growth
  • Extremadura: 15.4% growth
  • Castilla y León: 11.5% growth

In these specific territories, foreign national contributors account for 7.4% in Asturias, 7.1% in Galicia and 10.4% in Castilla y León.

Demographic shifts are also evident in the gender composition of the workforce. Women now make up 43.1% of all foreign workers, totaling 1,335,803 foreign female contributors in the system.

Economic Contributions and Skill Levels

The profile of foreign employment in Spain has evolved toward higher qualifications. Since 2019, employment for foreign nationals in high-skilled occupations has increased by 30%.

Entrepreneurship is also a factor in this growth, with nearly half a million self-employed foreign nationals contributing to the generation of employment and wealth within the country.

Government officials have emphasized the necessity of this workforce for future economic stability. Elma Saiz stated that Spain will need 2.4 million jobs in the next decade to maintain its productivity level and noted that workers from other countries will be essential for ensuring social justice, cohesion, and shared prosperity.

Systemic Context

The growth of foreign contributors has outpaced the general growth of the Social Security system. In the original series of average contributions, foreign worker growth was +7.2% year-on-year, which was nearly five percentage points higher than the +2.4% increase seen across all contributors.

This trend aligns with broader system totals, such as the record of over 21.8 million average contributors recorded in October 2025, marking the second-best October in the series.
