BERLIN‌ –⁢ Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government is⁢ enacting⁤ stricter immigration policies, fulfilling campaign promises of a “migration turnaround” in Germany. The ‌conservative coalition is taking what it considers bold steps to reshape the nation’s approach to immigration.

Recent measures include increased border patrols and proposed changes impacting refugees and immigrants. The government aims to end family‍ reunification for refugees ⁤and curtail the fast-track citizenship option, previously available ⁢to‍ “highly integrated” immigrants‍ after three years.

Despite these changes, officials from the ruling coalition maintain their commitment to skilled worker immigration. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated the goal is to “reduce the pull factors to Germany”⁣ while still attracting needed talent.

However, immigration and labor experts are raising concerns. They suggest ‍that the current anti-migrant rhetoric, primarily ⁤targeting asylum seekers, could broadly discourage immigration, including skilled workers vital to the German economy.
