JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A foreign citizen was arrested Monday after a violent outburst that began at a Kalibata City apartment complex and ended in a supermarket, according to police.
apartment Disturbance Leads to Supermarket Chaos
The incident began around 2 p.m. local time at the Kalibata City Apartment in Pancoran, South Jakarta. Hilman Lutfi, 31, a resident of the complex, told reporters the man, a Ghanaian national and fellow resident, had a history of disturbing neighbors.
According to Lutfi, the man assaulted a painter working in the building, striking him with an iron bar. “There was a paint officer working on the floor. For some reason, he hit the officer with an iron stick,” lutfi said.
Hostage Situation and Supermarket Mayhem
Apartment management, police, and immigration officials responded to the initial assault. However, the situation escalated when the man allegedly took his own child hostage, using a knife as a threat while attempting to flee to his car, Lutfi said.
The pursuit led to a nearby supermarket in Kalibata City Square, where the man’s erratic behavior continued. “maybe because of the depressed condition, he ran here and there and arrived at the supermarket,” Lutfi stated.
Inside the supermarket, the man reportedly stripped down to his pants and covered himself in oil before continuing his rampage. “strangely, he was already covered in oil and naked. There,he went berserk again. Many storefronts broke and broken,” lutfi recounted.
Injuries and Apprehension
Lutfi reported witnessing two people injured during the supermarket incident, one with a facial wound and another with a leg injury.
The man then fled to the upper floors of the mall, eventually cornered in a clinic near the supermarket. “The tantrums were intense, he ran up. On the ground floor (outside the mall), he ran to be chased until he was cornered. there he could not go anywhere anymore. Fortunately it could be detained,” Lutfi said.
Police apprehended the man around 8 p.m. local time.
