A dedicated Forest Department official, Puthur Forest Beat Assistant Kalimuthu, tragically lost his life on December 6, 2024, while participating in a tiger census in the Attappadi region of Palakkad, kerala. The incident underscores the inherent dangers faced by those working to protect India’s vital wildlife populations.
Attack During Census operation
According to reports,Kalimuthu and a colleague were conducting the census when they were unexpectedly attacked by a tiger. Both men attempted to flee the scene, but Kalimuthu was fatally injured. His colleague promptly alerted the Rapid Response Team (RRT), initiating a search operation.
The search, focused on the Mulli forest area within Putur, ultimately led to the finding of Kalimuthu’s body. This incident follows a concerning event just the previous day, where a team of five forest guards found themselves temporarily trapped in the same Putur forest area, highlighting a potential increase in wildlife encounters.
Rising Concerns for Forest Personnel Safety
This tragedy raises critical questions about the safety protocols and resources available to forest personnel involved in wildlife monitoring and conservation efforts. Tiger populations in India, while showing signs of recovery through initiatives like Project Tiger, still pose important risks to those working in close proximity to their habitats.
The Kerala Forest Department has not yet released a full statement regarding the incident, but an investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and to review existing safety measures. This event serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals dedicated to preserving India’s natural heritage.
