Former Cork Footballer Takes Charge as New Manager of Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh: A Game-Changer for Local Football

Liam Shorten Takes Charge of Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh

Liam Shorten, a former Cork footballer, has become the new manager of Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh. He steps into this role after playing for the team for 20 years. Shorten replaces Johnny Crowley, who managed the team for only one season.

Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh struggled in the McCarthy Insurance Group SAFC this year. They did not advance past their group, achieving one win against Kiskeam while losing to Carrigaline and Cill na Martra. Since the championship’s restructuring in 2020, the team has only reached the semi-finals once, in 2021 under Denis Reen.

Shorten is a popular choice for management. His familiarity with the players may give him an edge in a challenging championship. The 2025 SAFC group stage draw will happen soon at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Joining Shorten are Shane Dineen and Andy Concannon. Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh last won a county title 18 years ago.

O’Donovan Rossa Appoints New Manager

O’Donovan Rossa will have a new manager next season. Gene O’Donovan has stepped down after facing challenges, including significant player injuries during his tenure. He was in charge for three years and reached the semi-finals in 2022.

Gene Hourihane, a long-time member of the club, will take over as manager. He was involved with the O’Donovan Rossa U21 team and understands the current group of players well. Shane Crowley will assist as a coach. Crowley previously managed the team in 2015 and 2016, leading them to the last four of the Cork SFC.

O’Donovan Rossa last played in the top tier of the Cork football championship in 2019 before the change to a group format.
