Former Cricket Captains Urge Pakistan to Provide Proper Medical Care for Imran Khan

Former Pakistan cricket captain and prime minister Imran Khan is facing renewed appeals from 21 international cricket skippers, who have called on the Islamabad government to ensure he receives proper medical care and humane treatment while in custody, according to reports from BBC News and The Hindu.

The cricketer-turned-politician has been held in Adiala Jail since August 2023 on various corruption charges which he denies. According to BBC News, a group of prominent former captains initiated a letter to Pakistan’s current Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, expressing deep concern over Khan’s health status at age 73 and demanding adherence to court-ordered medical evaluations.

The signatories point to a recent hospital visit where Khan was examined for only a few hours. According to The Hindu, Pakistan’s Supreme Court had ordered that Khan be transferred to a hospital for examination by a specific medical board that included his own personal physicians and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, alongside reinstating weekly family visits.

Instead of the court-directed board, Khan was examined by a state-appointed team at a government-run hospital in Islamabad, declared medically fit, and quickly returned to prison, according to BBC News reporting. His legal team and family argue this process falls short of judicial mandates.

The international cricket figures laid out three clear demands in their letter to Prime Minister Sharif. According to The Hindu, the demands ask that the Supreme Court-directed medical board be permitted to complete a full and independent assessment of Khan’s health, particularly regarding the reported loss of vision in his right eye.

The letter also urges authorities to honor weekly family visits without administrative interruptions or delays, and insists that any medical treatment recommended by the court-sanctioned board be provided promptly, as reported by BBC News.

Initiated by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, the letter highlights a unique bond among the players. According to BBC News, the signatories wrote that they act not as politicians, but as former colleagues and rivals sharing a bond forged on the cricket field that transcends national borders and disputes.

Fourteen of these former skippers previously supported an earlier appeal submitted in February, which also requested humane treatment and proper medical care, according to BBC News. At that time, Khan’s lawyer claimed his client had only 15% vision remaining in his right eye due to delayed action by prison authorities.

The roster of signatories spans multiple eras and cricketing nations, uniting legendary names behind the welfare appeal. According to The Hindu, the complete list of signatories includes Michael Atherton, Alex Blackwell, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Sir Alastair Cook, Sunil Gavaskar, Lee Germon, Adam Gilchrist, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Sir Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev Nikhanj, Arjuna Ranatunga, Sir Andrew Strauss, Dilip Vengsarkar, Stephen Waugh, and John Wright.

Khan previously served as captain of the Pakistan national cricket team before entering politics and serving as the nation’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022. He has faced charges in more than 100 cases since his 2023 arrest, which his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, maintains are politically motivated and have triggered widespread protests and subsequent crackdowns, as noted by BBC News.
