Minehead, Somerset – A community is coming together in the wake of a harrowing school bus crash that left young students injured and shaken. The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, saw a bus carrying Minehead Middle School pupils leave the road and overturn down a steep embankment.
A heroic Witness Recounts the Ordeal
One local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, described the terrifying scene as he drove towards the crash site. “I first helped two teachers on the side of the road,” he recounted. As he slowly navigated the winding roads towards a local pub, which had been designated as a safe haven, he encountered a group of children and another adult.
“They were just sort of stranded ther,” he explained. “They didn’t know what was going on, really. They wouldn’t have known where they were and there were high trees behind and in front of them because the road runs through the cliff a bit.”
The witness described the children as visibly injured, crying, and deeply upset. “It was to far, these were very young middle school children. They’d just been upside down in a bus, over a cliff, all the windows had broken in the bus,and they’d scrambled out and been helped out by emergency services.” He added, “I presume some of them were told to make their way up but they just couldn’t walk up.”
Shock and Resilience in the Aftermath
After transporting the two teachers to where ambulances were waiting, the resident returned to assist another teacher and a child. “They were in shock. They didn’t really say a lot,” he recalled. “One teacher said: ‘I’m never going back on a bus or coach ever again.'”
Returning home, the witness found sleep elusive, deeply affected by the experience. “They’re just so innocent and it wasn’t their fault. It was a sorry sight,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion. “When you hear it’s children from a middle school, I should think everybody dropped everything like I did, because it’s just something about children – they’re pretty helpless, really. They couldn’t even walk to the pub because they just got tired, which is quite sad.”
The Crash and Ongoing Examination
The accident took place between Wheddon Cross and Timberscombe at approximately 3:15 pm on Thursday. The bus veered off the road, overturned, and came to rest about 20 feet down a steep slope. The recovery of the vehicle and the subsequent investigation are proving to be complex, with the road expected to remain closed until early next week.
Community Support and Tributes
In the wake of the tragedy, the Minehead community has rallied to support the affected families. Fundraisers have been established, quickly amassing tens of thousands of pounds. Tributes, including heartfelt notes and floral arrangements, have been left at the entrance to Minehead Middle School, which remained closed on Friday as the school and wider community grappled with the devastating event. The outpouring of support underscores the deep sense of care and solidarity within the town.
