A Sudden Loss for the Metal World
Brent Hinds, the founding member and former led guitarist of the critically acclaimed heavy metal band Mastodon, died Wednesday, September 13, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia, following a motorcycle accident. He was 51 years old. According to police reports, Hinds’ Harley-Davidson collided with a BMW SUV when the SUV driver failed to yield while making a turn. the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed his death.
Mastodon released a statement on Instagram expressing their profound grief: ”We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many.”
From Alabama Roots to Progressive Metal Pioneers
Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000, alongside bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer Brann Dailor. The band quickly rose to prominence, blending hardcore punk with progressive rock, alternative metal, and grunge influences. Albums like Remission,Leviathan, and Emperor of Sand garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase, earning Mastodon a Grammy Award.
But Hinds’ musical journey began long before Mastodon. Raised in Alabama, he initially learned to play the banjo at his father’s insistence, as he recounted in a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone. “My dad’s cool as hell,” Hinds said, “but in an asshole move, he made me learn the banjo before he would buy me a guitar.” This early exposure to “hillbilly music” with his uncle ultimately fueled his passion for the guitar, leading to hours of solitary practice. “My mom would come in and say, ‘are you OK? You haven’t been out of your room in two days.'”
Beyond Mastodon, Hinds was a prolific musician, contributing to a diverse range of projects including Fiend Without a face, The Blood Vessels, West End Motel, Four Hour Fogger, The Last of the Blue Eyed Devils, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, and Legend of the Seagullmen. This demonstrated a broad musical palette that extended beyond the confines of heavy metal.
A complex Departure and Lasting Legacy
Earlier in 2023,Mastodon announced that Hinds had “mutually decided to part ways” with the band,a statement Hinds himself disputed, claiming he was kicked out of the band. Mastodon performed at Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell gig in July without Hinds, signaling a definitive shift in the band’s lineup.
Despite his success within the metal genre, Hinds didn’t strictly identify as a heavy metal guitarist. He possessed a deep appreciation for classical guitar, country music, and the heavier side of psychedelic rock. This eclectic taste informed his unique playing style and songwriting contributions to Mastodon.
the news of Hinds’ death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians. Queens of the Stone Age posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Rest in Peace Brent Hinds. With love & respect.See you on the other side old friend.” Alice in Chains’ William DuVall expressed his shock and sadness, stating, ”This has knocked the wind out of me. RIP to the great Brent Hinds.”
