Former NFL Player Efe Obada Retires to Launch UK Youth Foundation

Former NFL player Efe Obada has confirmed his retirement from professional American football after a ten-year career and simultaneously launched a new foundation supporting care-experienced young people in the UK, according to reporting from the Sport Industry Group and the BBC.

From Warehouse Security to NFL Career

Obada’s journey to the NFL began after he was trafficked from the Netherlands and abandoned in London as a child, leading him and his sister into the care of social services and foster care in south London. At age 22, while working as a warehouse security guard and living outside the city, he bumped into an old friend who invited him to play amateur American football for the London Warriors, according to the BBC. After just five games at the amateur level, future Super Bowl winner and Warriors coach Aden Durde helped secure a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys, leading Obada to join their practice squad in 2015.

Over a decade in professional football, Obada appeared in 80 NFL games, recording 15 quarterback sacks while playing for the Dallas Cowboys, Carolina Panthers, Buffalo Bills, and Washington Commanders, as detailed by the Sport Industry Group and the BBC. One of the defining moments of his career occurred during his 2018 NFL debut for the Carolina Panthers, where he recorded a sack, an interception, and a forced fumble. Reflecting on that performance, Obada told the BBC, That really put me on the map. There was a lot of pent-up frustration from all the rejections that led to that moment. He later fulfilled a personal ambition by playing for the Panthers in London in 2019 in front of family and friends, before stints with Buffalo and Washington.

Launching a Foundation for Care-Experienced Youth

Drawing directly from his own background in the UK care system, Obada has established a new foundation focused on supporting care-experienced individuals aged between 11 and 25, according to the Sport Industry Group. Having become a British citizen in 2025, Obada has returned to south London to launch the charity and intends to remain active in community projects alongside upcoming work in broadcasting. The initiative arrives as athlete-led charitable programs take on a more visible role across UK sport, with current and former athletes increasingly leveraging their profiles to support youth development and social causes.
