Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head coach of the national Test team, marking a significant shift in the country’s approach to Test cricket ahead of the two-match series against Bangladesh starting next month. The decision, announced alongside a revamped squad featuring four uncapped players, underscores PCB’s ambition to blend experience with fresh talent as the team prepares for a challenging tour.

Sarfaraz, who led Pakistan to the 2017 Champions Trophy victory as captain, brings a wealth of playing experience and a deep understanding of the game. His appointment is notable not only for his illustrious playing career but also for his recent role as mentor to the Pakistan Under-19 team, which won the Asia Cup earlier this year. Sarfaraz will be supported by a new backroom team, including former teammates Asad Shafiq and Umar Gul, who will serve as batting and bowling coaches, respectively.

Shafiq, a member of both the men’s and women’s selection panels, has never held a formal coaching role before, while Gul has previously coached Pakistan’s white-ball sides. This combination of fresh and experienced faces in the coaching staff reflects PCB’s strategy to merge new ideas with proven expertise.

Fresh Faces in the Squad

The PCB has named four uncapped players—Abdullah Fazal, Azan Awais, Ghazi Ghori and Amad Butt—to the Test squad for Bangladesh. Fazal, the leading run-scorer in the recent President’s Trophy with 622 runs at an average of 51.83, has been a standout performer in domestic first-class cricket. He made two centuries and two half-centuries in the tournament, including a player-of-the-final performance with scores of 88 and 114 as Karachi Blues won the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2025-26.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ghazi Ghori, who made his international debut during Pakistan’s ODI tour of Bangladesh, scored 531 runs at an average of 48.27 in domestic first-class cricket, matching Fazal’s tally of two centuries. Azan Awais, an opening batter, has been in prime form over the last two first-class seasons, scoring 2,673 runs at an average of 48.6, including ten centuries. Fast-bowling allrounder Amad Butt, who played a pivotal role in his team’s record 40-run defence in January 2026, took 32 wickets at 19.21 in the 2024-25 season and was captain of his team when they won the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and President’s Trophy.

These four players join a squad that includes established names such as Mohammad Abbas, who returns after missing the last two home Test series, and Test captain Shan Masood. The batting lineup features Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Agha, Saud Shakeel, and Imam-ul-Haq, while the bowling attack includes fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, and Khurram Shahzad, along with spinners Noman Ali and Sajid Khan.

Strategic Moves and Challenges Ahead

The PCB’s decision to appoint Sarfaraz as head coach and integrate four uncapped players into the Test squad signals a clear intent to rejuvenate Pakistan’s Test cricket. The team’s recent struggles, including a two-match home series loss to South Africa last October, have highlighted the need for innovation and a fresh approach.

What explains no Pakistan captain taking a stand for Imran Khan as 14 former captains have?

Sarfaraz’s appointment is particularly significant given his strong bond with Test captain Shan Masood, who has been a key figure in Pakistan’s recent Test resurgence. The duo’s understanding of the game and their shared history could prove invaluable as Pakistan looks to build on its recent form and navigate the challenges of playing in Bangladesh, a team known for its strong home advantage in Test cricket.

With the series against Bangladesh scheduled for next month, all eyes will be on how Sarfaraz’s coaching team and the new-look squad perform. The PCB’s bold moves suggest a commitment to long-term growth, even if the immediate results may be uncertain.
