Former Russian Olympic cyclist Sergei Kucherov has died at the age of 46 while fighting in the war in Ukraine, state news agency TASS reported, as Russian media outlets also disclosed the unrelated combat death of former Belgorod mayor Konstantin Polezhayev after he signed a Ministry of Defense contract.
Olympic Career And Combat Death Of Sergei Kucherov
Sergei Kucherov represented Russia in track cycling across two Olympic Games during his athletic career, specializing in the sprint and team sprint events. He earned multiple Russian national championship titles before competing on the international stage. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he finished 12th in the team sprint alongside teammates Denis Dmitriev and Sergei Polinsky. At the 2012 London Olympics, he secured seventh place competing with Dmitriev and Sergei Borisov.

Military Contract And Death Of Former Belgorod Mayor Konstantin Polezhayev
In a separate report published by local outlet Fonar, former Belgorod mayor and regional deputy governor Konstantin Polezhayev died on the front lines in Ukraine at age 54. Polezhayev entered the military conflict after signing a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense following a criminal conviction.
Following the start of the full-scale war, Polezhayev oversaw the repair of residential housing, utility networks, and bomb shelters damaged by shelling in the Belgorod region. Authorities subsequently removed him from office and detained him on charges of large-scale bribery. In August 2024, the Oktyabrsky District Court in Belgorod sentenced him to five years in a strict-regime penal colony, imposed a 36 million ruble fine, and banned him from holding public office for eight years. Instead of serving his prison sentence, he signed the military contract.
Legal Proceedings And Unanswered Questions Regarding The Deployments
The Belgorod Regional Court suspended Polezhayev’s criminal case proceedings in October 2024 after receiving a request from his military unit commander stating that he was on active duty. Local sources noted that his death did not occur within the Belgorod region that he formerly administered.

Official channels have not disclosed the specific dates when either Kucherov or Polezhayev deployed to Ukraine, nor have they clarified the exact command structures or operational assignments tied to their service.
