Sri Lanka’s Presidential Transition: From Rajapaksa to Dissanayake
Table of Contents
A look at the political upheaval in Sri Lanka, culminating in the election of Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the country’s shift towards leftist governance.
The economic Crisis and Rajapaksa’s Fall
Sri Lanka experienced its most severe economic downturn as independence in 2022, sparking months of widespread protests. These protests ultimately led to the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in july 2022. The crisis was fueled by factors including unsustainable debt, mismanagement of foreign exchange reserves, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism.
Rajapaksa’s departure created a power vacuum, and Ranil Wickremesinghe, a veteran politician, stepped in as president. Wickremesinghe, though, was viewed unfavorably by many protesters due to his perceived alignment with the Rajapaksa family.
Wickremesinghe’s Interim Presidency
Prior to becoming president, Ranil Wickremesinghe had served as Prime Minister a remarkable six times since entering politics in 1977, according to the guardian. Despite his extensive political experience, he never completed a full term as Prime Minister. His appointment as president was seen by some as a continuation of the existing political order rather than a break from it.
Wickremesinghe’s initial task was to stabilize the economy and negotiate with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout. In march 2023, Sri Lanka secured a $2.9 billion bailout from the IMF, contingent on debt restructuring and economic reforms, as reported by Reuters.
The rise of Anura Kumara Dissanayake
In a significant political shift in September 2024, Ranil Wickremesinghe was replaced by Anura Kumara dissanayake as President. Dissanayake leads the Janatha Vimukthi peramuna (JVP), a leftist party with a complex history.
The JVP gained prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, but was involved in periods of violent insurgency.Dissanayake has actively worked to distance the party from its past, focusing on anti-corruption measures and promises to address abuses of power. His campaign resonated with voters disillusioned with the conventional political establishment.
