Recent medical research presents a complex and contrasting view of how red meat consumption affects the risk of dementia, suggesting that the impact may depend heavily on the type of meat consumed and the genetic profile of the individual.

While some studies link processed meats to cognitive decline, new findings indicate that for a specific subgroup of the population with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease, a diet higher in meat may actually help ward off dementia.

The Role of Genetic Risk Factors

Research led by Jakob Norgren at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden suggests that conventional dietary advice may be unfavorable for a genetically defined subgroup of the population. The study followed more than 2,100 adults in Sweden, all aged 60 or older and free of dementia at the start of the study, for up to 15 years as part of the Swedish National Study on Aging, and Care.

The Role of Genetic Risk Factors

The researchers focused on individuals carrying the APOE 3/4 or 4/4 gene combinations, which are associated with an increased likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In the United States, approximately one in four people carry these specific gene combinations.

The findings revealed that among those with this high-risk genetic profile, participants who ate less meat were more than twice as likely to develop dementia compared to those without the genetic variants. However, this increased likelihood disappeared among the fifth of participants who consumed the most meat.

For those who are aware that they belong to this genetic risk group, the findings offer hope. the risk may be modifiable through lifestyle changes.

Risks Associated with Processed Red Meats

In contrast to the findings regarding genetic risk groups, other research highlights the dangers of processed red meats. A Harvard study published on February 11, 2025, in the journal Neurology, linked the consumption of processed red meats—such as salami, ham, and bacon—to an increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline.

This observational study involved more than 133,000 people over four decades. The data showed that individuals who ate a quarter-serving or more of processed red meat per day had a 13% higher risk of developing dementia and a 14% higher risk of experiencing cognitive decline compared to those who ate the least amount (a tenth of a serving per day).

The study further noted that for every additional serving of processed meat eaten per day, there was an increase of 1.6 years in the speed of cognitive aging. The researchers suggested this connection is plausible because processed meats contain harmful chemicals and saturated fats that can promote brain cell damage.

Unprocessed Red Meat and Dietary Alternatives

The Harvard research also examined unprocessed red meats, such as steak or lamb. It found that individuals who consumed a daily serving (approximately 3 ounces) had a higher risk of subjective, or self-observed, cognitive decline compared to those who ate less than half a serving daily.

To mitigate these risks, the study found that replacing one daily serving of processed red meat with legumes or nuts lowered the risk of dementia by 19%.

Understanding the Scientific Conflict

The discrepancy between these findings underscores the importance of personalized nutrition. While processed meats are generally linked to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and cognitive decline, the Swedish study suggests that unprocessed meat may provide a protective effect for those with specific genetic vulnerabilities.

the Harvard study was observational and cannot prove causation. Similarly, the findings from the Karolinska Institute suggest that meat-heavy diets may only be beneficial for a select group of people with specific genetic markers, rather than the general population.
