Formula 1 grand prix races are set to become shorter starting in 2027, according to an official decision by the Formula 1 Commission. The Commission, which met at the FIA’s London offices on September 21, approved reducing the normal maximum race distance from 305 kilometers down to 290 kilometers.
Why Formula 1 is Shortening Race Distances for 2027
The adjustment is part of a series of refinements linked directly to the 2027 power unit regulations. The governing body expects the shorter distance to shave roughly two or three laps off a standard grand prix. This modification follows earlier changes to the 2027 and 2028 power unit framework designed to decrease energy management demands and promote flat-out running. Those related adjustments involve tweaks to engine output, fuel energy flow, and electrical deployment. The third Formula 1 Commission meeting of 2026 was chaired jointly by FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis and Formula One Management President and CEO Stefano Domenicali. Alongside the distance reduction, the Commission agreed on a revised approach for races disrupted by rain or other red-flag stoppages. A hard stop time will be introduced to mark the end of racing activity, while the existing three-hour maximum window from the start to the finish of a grand prix, including interruptions, will be eliminated entirely. The two-hour limit on actual racing time will remain unchanged. The FIA stated that this adjustment aims to give spectators the best possible chance of seeing a full race when delays occur. The Commission also greenlit greater flexibility to extend free practice sessions when red flags or other delays substantially cut into running time. Furthermore, Formula 1 will remove gearbox homologation from 2027 after consulting with the relevant manufacturer working group and receiving a recommendation from the Sporting Advisory Committee, a step the FIA noted will preserve development freedom for suppliers.
