DES MOINES — Fort Dodge High School freshman Knox Ayala secured a bronze medal at the 2026 IHSAA Class 3A State Wrestling Tournament, capping off a promising debut season. Ayala’s performance marks the ninth state medal earned by members of the Ayala family, a wrestling dynasty that includes his older brothers, Drake and Dru, both currently competing for the University of Iowa.
Ayala (31-6) competed in the 106-pound weight class, entering the tournament as the fourth seed. His journey to the podium wasn’t without a challenge, as he faced a tough semifinal matchup against the top-seeded Amir Newman-Winfrey of Southeast Polk (45-1). While Ayala lost to Newman-Winfrey, a “phenom” according to reporting, he demonstrated resilience by battling back through the consolation bracket.
His path to the third-place match included a decisive 11-3 major decision victory over Vincent Moore (41-14) of West Des Moines Valley. Ayala then clinched the bronze medal with a narrow 8-7 decision over Abe Heysinger (33-10) of Dubuque Senior.
Fort Dodge High School head coach Bobby Thompson, who is also Ayala’s uncle, praised his nephew’s performance. “Knox had a great tournament,” Thompson said. “He had a great season for an undersized freshman. He lost to the No. 1 seed and battled back from there.” Thompson also highlighted Ayala’s ability to compete against older, more experienced wrestlers, noting that his first two tournament wins came against seniors.
Ayala’s earlier victories included a dominant 25-9 technical fall over Eddie Salgado (34-12) of Ankeny, completed in 4 minutes and 29 seconds, and a 4-0 shutout over Lucas Reeder (50-5) of Pleasant Valley in the quarterfinal round.
The Ayala family’s wrestling legacy is well-established in Iowa high school wrestling. Drake Ayala is a three-time state champion and a runner-up finisher, while Dru Ayala was a two-time state finalist, also achieving fourth and fifth-place finishes. The family’s combined medal count now stands at nine, a testament to their dedication and success in the sport.
