Fortnite’s Potential Return to Apple’s App Store Hinges on global Agreement
CARY, N.C. (AP) — Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced the company plans to resubmit Fortnite to Apple’s iOS App Store in the U.S. next week. This move follows a recent court ruling addressing Apple’s App Store policies. However, the popular game’s return is not yet assured.
Epic Proposes a “Peace”
Sweeney stated that Epic is prepared to resolve its ongoing disputes with Apple regarding App Store regulations. “We will take Fortnite on the American iOS App Store next week,” Sweeney said.
In a social media post, Sweeney outlined what he termed a “peace proposal.” He stated that if Apple extends the same terms globally – allowing Fortnite to operate without Apple’s commission on in-app purchases – Epic would bring Fortnite back to the App Store and drop all current and future litigation on the matter.
The Core of the Dispute: V-Bucks and Commissions
The central issue revolves around how Fortnite handles in-game currency, known as V-Bucks. Epic Games proposes that iPhone and iPad users would not purchase V-Bucks directly through the iOS app.Rather, the app would direct players to the Epic Games website to make their purchases. this would allow Epic to bypass Apple’s commission fees on those transactions.
Apple’s Stance
Apple has historically resisted this type of arrangement. The company typically charges developers a commission ranging from 15% to 30% on digital transactions within iOS applications. Furthermore, Apple prohibits third-party app stores on its devices.
A global Condition
While the recent court decision may compel Apple to allow Fortnite to operate under Epic’s proposed model in the U.S., Sweeney is emphasizing the need for a “global” agreement.
Background: Fortnite’s App store Absence
fortnite was removed from the App Store in 2020 after Epic Games implemented a direct payment system that circumvented apple’s policies.Apple later removed the game, leading to a legal battle that, according to reports, resulted in financial losses for Apple.
Option Access
Although the native Fortnite request has been unavailable on iPhones, iPads, and Macs for several years, the game remains accessible through cloud gaming platforms such as Nvidia GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming via web browsers.
