The addition of character Nikki Freeman from the film Obsession to Epic Games’ Fortnite has triggered a debate among players over the depiction of a trauma survivor in a video game. Epic Games released the character on October 21, 2026, following a collaborative video with actress Indi Navarrette, introducing Nikki as a purchasable outfit in the battle royale title.

Player Backlash Over Nikki Freeman Outfit

The controversy stems from the character’s narrative arc in Obsession, where Nikki serves as a security victim whose body is possessed by a malicious entity called Bear, played by actor Michael Johnston. Within the film, the entity controls her physically while the real Nikki remains trapped inside her own mind, unable to intervene as the entity commits atrocities.

Players voiced strong objections on social media regarding the commercialization of a character who experiences non-consensual violation and psychological torment in her source material. One user on X wrote, choosing a rape victim to be an entertainment element in the game and the irony that Nikki suffers in the film from losing control of her body and mind is a provocative decision against her.

Another user expressed similar frustration over the meme culture surrounding the release, stating, I kind of hate how Nikki has become meme material, I feel like it obscures the real horrors her character went through in the film. Additional criticism targeted specific cosmetic animations included in the bundle, such as a prop sign emote that recreates a dinner table argument scene from the movie.

Community Defense and Alternative Perspectives

Conversely, a distinct segment of the player base defended the inclusion of the outfit, arguing that the fictional nature of the character separates her appearance in a video game from the heavy themes of the film. One player argued, There is definitely a heated debate about adding Nikki to Fortnite, but I don’t understand how the character appearing in the game means not taking her story seriously. Most people buy these items because they care about the character, not because it’s just a joke.

Supporters also urged against minimizing the character solely to her victimhood. Another user noted, Please let’s not reduce Nikki to being just another victim, yes her story is tragic and terrifying, but that doesn’t mean preventing her appearance in multimedia works no matter what their level is. A third commenter added, It is difficult for some people to grasp that Nikki is not a real person but a fictional character.

Calls for Boycott and Ongoing Reception

The friction between players viewing the cosmetic as insensitive and those defending it as harmless fiction led to calls for a complete boycott of Fortnite on social media. Although one prominent post advocating for a total boycott was subsequently deleted, the discussion highlights ongoing community sensitivities regarding how horror cinema properties are adapted into multiplayer gaming ecosystems.
