In a significant move, thousands of mosquito-eating fish, specifically the Gambusia affinis species, have been released into local parks. This initiative marks a crucial step in Foshan’s integrated vector control program, aiming to disrupt the transmission cycle of these debilitating illnesses.

Mosquitoes are vectors for a range of serious diseases,posing a significant public health challenge globally.Dengue fever and chikungunya, in particular, have seen concerning outbreaks in various regions. Foshan has been especially affected by chikungunya,reporting over 4,000 cases. This surge underscores the urgent need for effective and sustainable control measures. Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, characterized by fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and a rash. In severe cases, it can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever, a life-threatening condition. Chikungunya, also transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, causes severe joint pain, often debilitating, along wiht fever, rash, and fatigue. both diseases can have significant impacts on public health and economic productivity.

Foshan’s Biological Control Strategy: The Power of Gambusia Affinis

Foshan’s innovative approach centers on the introduction of Gambusia affinis, commonly known as the mosquito fish. This species has a voracious appetite for mosquito larvae, making it a natural ally in disease prevention.

How Mosquito Fish Work

The Gambusia affinis fish are strategically released into water bodies within parks and other public spaces where mosquitoes are known to breed. These fish actively consume mosquito eggs and, more importantly, mosquito larvae.A single Gambusia affinis fry can reportedly consume between 100 and 200 mosquito larvae daily. By targeting the larval stage, the fish effectively reduce the mosquito population before they can mature and transmit diseases.

According to Zhang Huabin, deputy director of Foshan’s Chancheng district urban management and comprehensive law enforcement bureau, this is the first large-scale deployment of Gambusia affinis in the city. Initial monitoring by the district’s urban management department suggests a promising outcome: a projected decrease in mosquito larvae density by over 60 percent within three months of the fish release. This biological control method aims to cut off the transmission chain of mosquito-borne infectious diseases at its source.
