A new study published in Environmental Research suggests a potential link between long-term exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2), a byproduct of fossil fuel combustion, and an increased risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The research, conducted in Canada, adds to a growing body of evidence highlighting the neurological impacts of air pollution.
The Study: Matching ALS Patients with Healthy Controls
Researchers meticulously matched 304 individuals diagnosed with ALS to 1,207 healthy control participants of the same age and sex. Crucially, they didn’t rely on self-reported exposure; instead, they leveraged comprehensive environmental records from CANUE (Canadian Urban Environmental Data) to estimate each participant’s historical exposure to various pollutants based on their primary residential location.This approach minimizes recall bias and provides a more accurate assessment of long-term exposure.

Key Findings: A critically important Association with SO2
The analysis revealed a “substantially higher history” of SO2 exposure among those diagnosed with ALS compared to the control group. This association remained statistically significant even after adjusting for potential confounding factors, such as socioeconomic status and other environmental pollutants.
Interestingly, while nitrogen dioxide (NO2) - another common air pollutant from vehicle exhaust and power plants – has been previously implicated in ALS risk,this study didn’t find a statistically significant association after accounting for other variables. This suggests that SO2 may play a more direct or prominent role in the advancement of the disease.
