According to a study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the discovery shifts paleontological understanding of how long-necked, plant-eating sauropods managed their reproductive cycles in colder regions far from the equator.
Discovery in the Chorrillo Formation
Researchers recovered 255 eggshell fragments between 2020 and 2024 in the Chorrillo Formation in southern Argentina, located 200 miles north of the Strait of Magellan. According to the study, these remains date back to the Cretaceous period when the location sat at latitudes between 55 degrees and 60 degrees south. Darla Zelenitsky, a paleontologist and associate professor at the University of Calgary in Alberta, noted via email that the clutches represent the highest-latitude nesting environment known for sauropods worldwide.
Most titanosaur eggs and eggshells previously turned up in lower-latitude regions closer to the equator. Warmer temperatures in those zones made incubating eggs much easier.
Reproduction Strategy at High Latitudes
Because sunlight is in shorter supply at high latitudes, titanosaurs adapted their nesting habits to survive the cooler southern reaches. According to Darla Zelenitsky, the most likely scenario is that these dinosaurs laid eggs in mound nests made of vegetation and soil where rotting plant material provided incubation heat.
Because their eggshells featured a high degree of porosity, leaving the eggs exposed would cause them to lose moisture, dehydrate, and result in embryonic death. Keeping the clutch covered in soil, sand, or plant matter ensured the nesting site remained sufficiently moist for the eggs to develop successfully.

Paleontologists are certain that titanosaurs did not brood their own eggs. Darla Zelenitsky explained that their massive size would have turned the nest into one giant omelette. Like most reptiles, they likely laid their eggs and left offspring to fend for themselves.
Broader Implications for Sauropod Biology
Steve Brusatte, a professor of paleontology and evolution at the University of Edinburgh who was not involved in the research, noted the significance of the finding.

During the Cretaceous period, certain colossal creatures from Earth’s ancient past deposited eggs and produced offspring in high-latitude environments, revealing a previously unknown aspect of dinosaur behavior and biology that highlights their remarkable resilience and adaptability.
Paul Upchurch, a professor of paleobiology at University College London, stated that the new egg discovery suggests these giants might have stayed in those regions all year, or at least completed their reproductive cycle during the warm part of the year at high latitudes.
