SPAIN – A newly discovered partial ‍skull, unearthed in northern Spain in 2022, represents the oldest hominin fossil ever found in Western Europe. The fossil, consisting⁤ of a fragment ⁤of a face including part of⁣ the left cheekbone and upper jaw, is estimated to ‌be between 1.1 million and 1.4 million years old, according to ‌research published in Nature.

Significance of the⁢ Find

Eric Delson, a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History, who was not involved in the study, called ⁤the find “engaging.” He noted‍ that it marks ‌the first ‌time that fossil remnants older than 1 million years have been discovered in Western Europe.

Previously, older ⁤hominin fossils, approximately 1.8 million years old,had been found‌ in Georgia,at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Asia.

Implications for Human Migration

Rick Potts, director of the Smithsonian human‍ origins program, stated that the Spanish fossil provides the first clear evidence that human ‌ancestors were present in Europe at that early time. However,Potts cautioned that the find does not necessarily indicate a continuous presence. “Thay⁣ might arrive at a new location and then become ‌extinct,” he said. Potts was not involved in the study.

Fossil Characteristics and Identification

Rosa Huguet, an archaeologist at the Paleoecology Institute of Human and Catalan Social Evolution in tarragona, Spain, and an author of the research, noted that the partial skull shares similarities with Homo erectus, but also exhibits some anatomical differences.

Potts said that Homo erectus emerged ‌roughly 2 million years ago, migrating from‌ Africa to Asia and Europe. The last known ‌individuals died⁤ out approximately 100,000 years ago.

Christoph zollikofer, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Zurich, who was not involved in the study, pointed out the difficulty in ⁢definitively identifying ancient human groups based on a single fragment, as opposed to more⁤ complete skeletal remains.

Atapuerca: A Rich Site for paleontological Discoveries

The cave complex in⁢ the Atapuerca Mountains of Spain, where the new fossil was discovered, has yielded numerous vital insights ‌into‌ the history of early humans. Researchers working in the region have also uncovered more recent fossils belonging to Neanderthals and Homo ‍sapiens.
