HANNOVER, Germany – The Wilhelm Busch Museum of Caricature and Drawing Art in Hanover is showcasing the diverse talents of four artists through the ”Writing Time” program, supported by the Lower Saxony foundation. The exhibition highlights contemporary narrative approaches in comic art.
Agnes Bührig reports on the unique perspectives presented by the scholarship recipients.
exploring Family Narratives and Historical Truths
Katia Fouquet’s work delves into complex family history. One piece depicts a figure in a stark landscape, with legs and boots intruding from above, accompanied by a stream of red liquid. Fouquet presents two views of her grandfather, contrasting the family’s narrative of victimhood with a more complete truth. Her archival research revealed that her grandfather, a returning war veteran in 1949, was not only a victim but also a judge.
I found these childhood ideas very exciting… the narration to always look at this sacrificial myth and not the perpetrators that I actually feel about.
Katia Fouquet
Diverse Styles and Approaches
The exhibition features a range of styles. American artist everett Glenn, working from Hugo Körtzinger’s studio in Wendland, presents a crime story set within an art collector’s world, rendered in a classic comic style. Joris Bas Backer, originally from the Netherlands, employs a more architectural approach in his graphic novel, utilizing floor plans, prefabricated buildings, and dialog within speech bubbles.
Gesa Schönermark, of the Lower Saxony Foundation, commented on the nature of graphic novels:
I also thought at the beginning: Isn’t something actually taken if I get a picture right away what I read? But it is indeed a different kind of text.It is often a conversation. they are thoughts – they are additions.

Oliver Grajewski’s Ink Drawings and Museum Director’s Viewpoint
Oliver Grajewski’s ink drawings, placed low on the wall, offer a visually striking experience. Their minimalist lines and laconic commentary provide a sharp critique. One drawing depicts a gallery visitor stating, “The stuff does not work for me,” in front of a wall of paintings.
Eva Jandl-Jörg, director of the Wilhelm Busch Museum, hopes the exhibition will encourage visitors to engage deeply with the art.
I hope that our audience takes with us for herself, for example with katja Fouquet: Simply take a closer look, to be at Everett Glenn: to be curious or go to the depths of Joris Bas Backer.
Eva Jandl-Jörg,Director of the Wilhelm Busch Museum
From Crime Thrillers to Historical Narratives
The exhibition showcases the breadth of the graphic novel medium, encompassing crime thrillers, documentaries, and historical narratives told from a first-person perspective. The Wilhelm Busch Museum plans to host comic salons six times a year to further explore the art form.
