Dublin Data Centers Face scrutiny Over Energy Use, Environmental Impact
Updated June 26, 2025
Dublin’s Equinix data center, an unassuming building in an industrial park, houses rows of servers that power essential online services. These include everything from internet banking and social media to artificial intelligence and TV streaming. Inside, the constant hum of machinery and the chill of the air, cooled to prevent overheating, are promptly noticeable.
Ireland hosts more than 80 data centers, which are vital to the nation’s economy. Though, these facilities are also massive energy consumers. Rosi Leonard, of Friends of the Earth, said data centers consume 22% of all electricity in ireland. “That’s more than all urban homes in the country,” Leonard said. “Ireland is a global outlier. The EU average is around 2% of electricity going to data centers; we are almost 20% over that.” The environmental impact of data center energy consumption is under scrutiny.
Data center providers say they are working to reduce their environmental impact.Warren Delaney, Ireland Operations Director for Equinix, said the company is undertaking grid response initiatives. “We would be asked at peak time during the day at certain times of the year to disconnect our data center load or partial load from the grid to help with the pressure that might be on the grid at the time,” Delaney said.

Students from Scoil Ghráinne Community National School in Dublin toured an Equinix data center to learn about its operations. Fourth-grader Graham Phelan said, “I learned that this place holds all the internet, and if the power goes out, it doesn’t go out in here.” Sharon Olaitan, also in fourth grade, noted, “You use things like Snapchat, Xbox, Instagram, and TikTok; they are all powered by a data center.” Audrey Gudz, another classmate, learned, “I learned that if you touch a wire, you could disconnect someone’s YouTube!”
What’s next
The debate around data center energy consumption and environmental sustainability is expected to continue. further discussions will likely involve balancing economic benefits with environmental duty, exploring renewable energy sources, and implementing more efficient cooling technologies.
