Framework Laptop 13 Pro Touchscreen: Leading the PC Industry Toward Repairability and Sustainability

Framework has unveiled its Laptop 13 Pro, a modular ultraportable designed to push the PC industry toward greater repairability and user ownership. The device, introduced during the company’s Next Gen livestream event, represents a ground-up redesign featuring Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3 processors, LPCAMM2 memory, and a haptic touchpad in a refined CNC aluminum chassis. With up to 20 hours of battery life and optional touchscreen display, the Laptop 13 Pro targets developers and power users seeking a repairable alternative to mainstream laptops.

Founder Nirav Patel described the Laptop 13 Pro as the culmination of six years of development, incorporating feedback from seven generations of the original Framework Laptop 13. “We’ve taken all of the feedback you’ve given us on the first seven generations of Framework Laptop 13 to make this the ultimate portable developer and power user machine,” Patel wrote in a company blog post. The laptop is Framework’s fourth model since its founding in 2020 and is positioned as a “MacBook Pro for Linux users” while maintaining full compatibility with Windows 11.

The Laptop 13 Pro is available in two configurations: a DIY Edition starting at $1,199 and pre-built models beginning at $1,499. Pre-built options include configurations with Ubuntu Linux pre-loaded, marking Framework’s first Ubuntu Certified system. The DIY Edition allows users to supply their own memory, storage, and operating system, reinforcing the company’s modular ethos. First shipments are scheduled for June following the opening of preorders.

Key hardware specifications include a 74Wh battery, Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor, and LPCAMM2 memory modules. The device features a haptic touchpad and, in certain configurations, a touchscreen display. Framework emphasizes Linux compatibility through component selection, firmware updates via LVFS, and upstream patch contributions to distro partners. Pre-release systems have been seeded to Linux distribution partners to ensure out-of-the-box support.

Alongside the Laptop 13 Pro, Framework announced updates to its Laptop 16 model, which now offers upgradeable graphics powered by NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 and AMD’s latest Ryzen AI 300 Series processors. The company also introduced a new OCuLink Dev Kit, wireless keyboard, and laptop sleeve during the livestream. Patel stated that these products “represent a step change in our capabilities” and fulfill recurring customer requests for enhanced performance, and customization.

Framework’s modular design philosophy centers on enabling users to repair, upgrade, and customize their devices using standard PC parts. The Laptop 13 Pro’s chassis is constructed from CNC aluminum, and internal components are designed for easy access without specialized tools. This approach contrasts with industry trends toward soldered components and glued assemblies that limit user intervention. The company maintains that its model supports long-term ownership by reducing electronic waste and extending device lifespans.

Industry analysts note that Framework’s success could influence broader PC design trends, particularly as regulatory pressure increases on manufacturers to improve product repairability. The European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which includes provisions for spare parts availability and repair documentation, aligns with Framework’s existing practices. While Framework remains a niche player compared to major PC vendors, its model demonstrates a viable path for sustainable hardware development.

For developers and Linux enthusiasts, the Laptop 13 Pro offers a hardware platform optimized for open-source software from the outset. The Ubuntu-certified configurations eliminate the typical hurdles of driver installation and system configuration associated with Linux on proprietary hardware. Framework’s commitment to upstream kernel contributions and firmware transparency aims to reduce fragmentation in Linux laptop support.

As the PC industry faces scrutiny over sustainability and user rights, Framework’s approach provides a tangible example of how modularity can coexist with performance and premium design. The Laptop 13 Pro does not seek to replicate the MacBook Pro but instead offers an alternative vision where repairability and user control are core features rather than afterthoughts. With shipping beginning in June, the real-world adoption of this model will test whether consumers value long-term ownership enough to prioritize it in purchasing decisions.
