France Condemns Israeli Strike on Iran Prison, Endangering Nationals
Updated June 24, 2025
France has voiced strong condemnation of Israel following a strike on Evin Prison in Tehran, which endangered French citizens.French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called the strike “unacceptable.” The incident has further inflamed tensions in the region, already heightened by recent military actions.
the Israeli air force bombing of the prison gates raised concerns about the safety of foreign nationals held there. Among those perhaps at risk were French citizens Cecile Kohler and jacques Paris, arrested in 2022 on espionage charges, which they deny. Noemie Kohler, Cecile’s sister, described the strike as “irresponsible,” highlighting the mortal danger faced by prisoners.
Iranian officials confirmed that parts of Evin Prison sustained damage in the attack. Video footage circulating online appeared to show the prison’s front entrance as the target.
Barrot stated he spoke with his Iranian counterpart and received assurances that Kohler and Paris were unharmed following the attack on Evin Prison.
“unacceptable”
French President Emmanuel Macron has also weighed in, asserting that the attack “had nothing to do” with preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Macron also criticized recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, deeming them illegal under international law. He stated that while France shares the goal of preventing Iranian nuclear proliferation, there is ”no legal basis” for the strikes.
Adding to the escalating tensions, Iran launched missiles at the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar in response to the American strikes.U.S. officials reported no casualties from the missile attack.
While U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi refuted the existence of any such agreement.Araghchi indicated, however, that Tehran would cease hostilities if Israel took the first step.
What’s next
The international community is closely watching for any de-escalation efforts following the recent exchange of attacks and counter-attacks. Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue to try and stabilize the region and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
