Measles Makes ⁤a⁢ Comeback: France Grapples with Rising Cases and Vaccine Hesitancy

Paris, France – After a period of relative calm, measles is resurging in France, raising concerns among health officials and highlighting the persistent challenge of vaccine hesitancy. Since the beginning of 2025, ⁢the country has seen a significant spike in cases, with over 800 people affected and ‍two deaths reported.

According to data from⁢ Public Health France, ⁤828 cases of measles ‍have⁤ been declared between January 1 and ⁢August 31, 2025. This number far exceeds the total of 483⁤ cases recorded throughout all of 2024. While the agency notes that⁤ the surge in cases has been on a “decay phase” as May, the figures remain alarming.

The two fatalities were immunocompromised individuals, according to a statement released by public Health France in June.

Measles, a highly contagious disease, is characterized by fever, respiratory symptoms, and ⁣a distinctive rash. In some instances, it can lead to severe⁢ complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (brain ‍inflammation), wich can result in lasting disabilities or even death.

The ⁣impact of the outbreak has been felt across the ⁣country, with 70 departments reporting at ⁢least one case. The five most affected departments are the⁣ North, the Bouches-du-Rhône, Aude, ⁣Haute-Savoie, and Isère.

Hospitalizations and complications have⁣ disproportionately affected infants and young children, and ‍also young adults.‍ Since the ⁢start of the year,⁢ just over a ⁢third of cases have required emergency room ⁢visits or hospitalization, with twelve individuals needing intensive care.⁢ More than ⁢one in ten cases have resulted in complications, including⁤ encephalitis.

A key factor driving the resurgence of ‍measles is insufficient vaccination⁤ rates. Among those cases since January for whom vaccination was recommended (people‍ over one year old and born after 1980) and whose vaccination status was known, 65% were ⁢either unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated.

This trend is not unique to France.‍ Many countries, including those in Europe and the United States, are struggling to maintain the 95% vaccination rate recommended by the‍ World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure⁤ sufficient collective immunity.

Health officials attribute the decline in vaccination rates, in part, to the spread of disinformation⁤ about vaccines, fueled by the ⁤COVID-19 pandemic and a growing distrust of health authorities.

The⁢ situation underscores the
