France School Stabbing: Teacher Critically Injured by Student

France School Stabbing: Teacher Critically Injured by Student

February 5, 2026 Ahmed Hassan World

A secondary school teacher in southern France is in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times by a 14-year-old student on Tuesday, February 3rd. The attack took place at La Guicharde secondary school in Sanary-sur-Mer, a coastal town in the Var region of south-eastern France.

Attempted Murder Investigation

Raphaël Balland, the public prosecutor in Toulon, stated that the student stabbed the 60-year-old art teacher three to four times. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. According to Balland, authorities believe the attack stemmed from recent tensions between the student and the teacher, with the student reportedly expressing anger towards her. “All we know is that there had been tensions with this teacher recently, and he was angry with her,” Balland said.

France’s Education Minister, Edouard Geffray, visited the school following the incident. He expressed his support for the victim, her family, and the wider educational community, stating, “My thoughts immediately go to the victim, her family, and the entire educational community, whose deep shock I share.” The minister shared his sentiments on X (formerly Twitter).

French President Emmanuel Macron has been regularly updated on the teacher’s condition, according to presidential officials.

Pattern of School Violence

This incident is the latest in a series of attacks within French schools in recent years, raising concerns about safety and security within the education system. In 2025, a 14-year-old was charged with the murder of a teaching assistant after allegedly stabbing her to death during a bag search in Nogent. Earlier in 2025, a student in Nantes killed a female student and wounded several others in a knife attack.

The attack also echoes the 2020 murder of Samuel Paty, a teacher who was killed by a Chechen refugee outside the school where he taught in a suburb of Paris. That attack was motivated by religious extremism, a factor authorities currently do not believe is present in the Sanary-sur-Mer stabbing.

Details of the Attack and Investigation

The stabbing occurred in front of approximately 20 other students. The student fled the classroom immediately after the attack but was apprehended in the schoolyard. Investigators have found no prior criminal record for the suspect. According to an investigating source, the student was reportedly shouting threats at the teacher before the attack. The teacher sustained two stab wounds to the abdomen and one or two to the arm.

La Guicharde school was evacuated following the attack, and lessons were cancelled on Wednesday, February 4th.

Security Concerns and Government Response

The incident has reignited debate surrounding security measures in French schools. In 2025, then-Prime Minister Francois Bayrou announced plans to test the implementation of security gates at schools following a similar stabbing incident. In September of 2025, a music teacher was stabbed in the face by a student in northeastern France.

The French government has faced increasing pressure to address the issue of student violence and ensure the safety of teachers, and students. The recent attacks have prompted calls for increased security measures, improved mental health support for students, and a review of disciplinary procedures within schools.

The investigation into the Sanary-sur-Mer stabbing is ongoing, with authorities focusing on understanding the motivations behind the attack and the nature of the tensions between the student and the teacher. The teacher remains in critical condition in hospital.
