France Defeats Poland 4-1 in World Cup Qualifying Match

Dijon, France – The French women’s national football team secured a decisive 4-1 victory over Poland on Saturday evening at Stade Gaston-Gérard, strengthening their position at the top of Group A2 in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying campaign.

Marie-Antoinette Katoto opened the scoring for France in the 20th minute, followed by Sakina Karchaoui who extended the lead to 2-1 in the 40th minute. Ewa Pajor briefly leveled the score for Poland in the 29th minute, but the French responded strongly.

The match took a turn in the 59th minute when Karchaoui converted a penalty, increasing France’s advantage to 3-1. Kadidiatou Diani then sealed the win with a goal in the 71st minute, bringing the final score to 4-1.

The victory was achieved despite a challenging second half for the French, as Poland’s Nadia Krezyman received a second yellow card in the 45th minute of added time, resulting in her expulsion from the match and leaving Poland to play with ten players.

France dominated possession throughout the game, controlling 71.4% of the ball compared to Poland’s 28.6%. They also outshot Poland 25 to 7, with 9 shots on target to Poland’s 3.

France’s coach, Laurent Bonadei, saw Melvine Malard’s performance as a key factor in the win, starting her in the lineup after she scored twice in the previous qualifier against Ireland. Pauline Peyraud-Magnin also returned to the starting eleven, taking her place in goal.

The win keeps France at the top of Group A2 with 6 points, while Poland remains on 1 point. The Netherlands also secured a win in the group, defeating Ireland 2-1.

France will next face the Netherlands on April 14th in a crucial match that could significantly impact their qualification chances. Captain Sakina Karchaoui expressed pride in her team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their humility and focus as they continue their qualifying journey.

Poland’s hopes of reaching the 2027 World Cup remain alive, but they will need to significantly improve their performance to compete with the top teams in the group. The team faced a difficult challenge against a strong French side, ranked seventh in the world, while Poland sits at 24th.

Historically, France has had the upper hand in encounters with Poland, having previously defeated them 2-0 and 6-0 in friendly matches. This latest victory further solidifies their dominance.
