Brussels – Belgium’s Defense Minister Theo Francken has described the relationship between the United States and NATO as a “marriage crisis,” expressing concern over frustrations on both sides of the Atlantic. Francken voiced these concerns during a discussion at the Atlantic Council in Washington on Tuesday, according to reporting by Foreign Policy.

Francken’s assessment comes amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. And its NATO allies, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict in Iran and the securing of the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members for what he perceives as insufficient financial contributions and a lack of engagement in key security challenges.

Trump’s Frustration with NATO

According to Foreign Policy, Trump has labeled NATO a “paper tiger” and has even threatened to withdraw the United States from the alliance. His administration is reportedly considering punitive measures against individual member states. Francken acknowledged this frustration, stating, “I’m convinced that we’re having a marriage crisis… There’s a lot of frustration on both sides of the Atlantic. A lot of miscomprehension of one another’s position and sometimes even anger.”

The situation is particularly acute regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies. While some European countries are preparing to contribute to a joint naval force to help secure the strait, Francken indicated they would only do so after a “stable cease-fire” is achieved. “We’re not going in when the ballistic missiles are going up and down,” he said.

Hormuz and European Caution

Francken’s comments reflect a cautious approach from European nations, who are hesitant to become directly involved in escalating tensions with Iran while active conflict continues. This stance contrasts with the Trump administration’s more assertive approach, which has led to increased pressure on NATO allies to demonstrate their commitment to the alliance.

NATO Responds to Trump Call—Hormuz Security Effort Begins?

The Belgian Defense Minister’s remarks underscore the growing strain within the transatlantic relationship, a partnership that has been a cornerstone of global security for nearly 80 years. He emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “That’s dangerous because geopolitical times are very unstable [and] difficult… And it’s better that we’re united.”

US-Iran Conflict and NATO’s Role

The current tensions stem from the ongoing conflict between the U.S. And Iran, which has seen a series of escalating incidents in the Middle East. Trump’s criticism of NATO has intensified as he seeks greater support from allies in confronting Iran’s actions in the region. He has specifically called out NATO’s reluctance to join U.S. Efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, labeling the alliance as “cowards” in response, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

Francken’s visit to Washington included meetings with senior Pentagon officials, where he likely discussed these concerns and sought to bridge the gap between European and American perspectives on the situation. The future of the U.S.-NATO relationship, and its implications for global security, remain uncertain as the conflict with Iran continues to unfold.
