An employee at Frankfurt Airport has died of malaria after six workers contracted the serious mosquito-borne infection in a rare outbreak, according to airport operator Fraport and public health officials.
Airport Outbreak Traced to Mosquito Arriving on Flight
German public health officials believe the mosquitoes responsible for the infections arrived at Germany’s busiest airport via an aircraft from a malaria-endemic region. The fatal case and wider outbreak were confirmed by a Fraport spokesperson, who stated,

Federal health authorities note that malaria in Germany almost exclusively affects long-haul travelers returning from endemic areas, making transmission within a domestic airport environment exceptionally rare. Investigation and Prevention Efforts Underway
The Frankfurt Public Health Department is leading the ongoing investigation into the outbreak. In response, Fraport has installed specialized mosquito traps across the airport facility. Captured insects are being sent to a laboratory to determine their specific species and exact geographic origin. Airport operators have distributed comprehensive safety information to staff members. Employees experiencing any malaria-like symptoms are being urged to consult a physician immediately and inform medical personnel of their airport workplace history. Malaria is caused by a parasite spread through the bites of specific mosquitoes, predominantly the Anopheles genus, and cannot be transmitted directly from person to person. While the World Health Organization classifies malaria as both preventable and curable, symptoms can range from mild fevers and headaches to life-threatening complications such as breathing difficulties, seizures, coma, and death, particularly among high-risk groups. Historical data compiled in a European study recording airport and baggage-borne malaria cases from 1969 to 2024 identified a total of 145 cases across Europe, with nine occurring in Germany.
