March 28, 2025

frankfurt – A new walking and cycle path, almost 2 kilometers long, connecting Nieder-Erlenbach and Nieder-eschbach, officially opened Friday, marking a step forward for enduring urban growth in Frankfurt. The path runs parallel to Niedererlenbacher and Niederschbacher Streets.
The project was implemented in two phases. The first phase, along Niedererlenbacher Street between Deuil-la-barre-Straße and Karl-Bieber-Höhe, was completed in 2008. In 2023, the intersection of Niederseschbacher Street with the L 3008 and the entrance area from Nieder-Erlenbach to Ohlenstück were redesigned.
Construction on the route along niederseschbacher and niederlenbacher Streets was completed from late February 2024 to mid-March 2025. Final touches, such as applying markings and attaching signs, will be completed once all trees are planted along the path.
At the opening ceremony, Hessian Prime Minister Boris Rhein said, As a passionate cyclist, I know how critically importent good and safe bike paths are. I am all the more pleased that we have come a big step forward with the new connection between Nieder-Erlenbach and Nieder-Eschbach.
He added that the project combines mobility and nature.
Mobility Director Wolfgang Siefert stated, I am pleased that we can finally offer the people in the north of Frankfurt this pleasant connection between the two districts. The school children are finally going on a safe way to school and, above all, short-distance commuters: The inside of the car is now an attractive alternative to the car on the bike.
Siefert also noted the path’s contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
sustainability and Nature Conservation
The project prioritized minimizing interference with the landscape. Of the 1,500 tons of gravel used, 85% consisted of recycled asphalt.Approximately 2,000 tons of earth were moved during construction.
To protect local wildlife, a flower strip was created for partridge and field sparrows. Protection measures for bat species were also implemented. The city is planting 106 wooden apple trees (Malus Sylvestris) along the route.
The path crosses an old Roman road, once a trade route. Two Elsberries (Sorbus Torminalis) will mark the crossing points. Klima and Environment director Tina Zapf-Rodríguez said, The new bike path not only connects the districts of climate-friendly and safe, but also leads along a historic route. In a few years- when the trees have grown- this will make a special charm of the route.
She also noted the benefits of green bike paths for climate and recreation.
Siefert summarized, we owe the fact that we were able to complete this part of the Frankfurt cycle path network prematurely, both the good interlinking cooperation and the committed use of our cooperation partners and local actors.
Inaugural Ride
Rhein and Siefert symbolically rode a section of the new path during the opening, highlighting its importance for sustainable mobility in Frankfurt.
Costs and Funding
The project’s overall investment totaled 2.8 million euros. the state of Hesse contributed 1.1 million euros in funding.
