Heart disease remains the number one killer in the U.S., affecting men, women, and most racial and ethnic groups. In , nearly one in four deaths in the United States was attributed to heart disease. Nationwide, someone dies of cardiovascular disease approximately every 34 seconds, and someone dies of stroke every 3 minutes and 14 seconds.
A key factor in preventing heart disease is managing blood pressure. High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease, and currently, nearly half of U.S. Adults have it. However, only one in four people with high blood pressure have it under control. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force strongly recommends routine blood pressure screening, recognizing hypertension as a major, preventable risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and heart attack.

Disparities in Heart Health Outcomes
Data from Clark County, Nevada, highlight concerning disparities in heart health. In , Black adults in the county experienced the highest prevalence of hypertension at 40.4% and stroke at 4.4%, as well as among the highest prevalence of coronary heart disease at 3.3% among racial and ethnic groups, according to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. In , Black adults in Clark County had the highest age-adjusted death rate due to heart attack, at 43.5 per 100,000, based on data from the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network.
“High blood pressure is common, serious and often undiagnosed, but it is also one of the most preventable risk factors for heart disease and stroke,” said Dr. Cassius Lockett, District Health Officer for the Health District. “Providing screenings and education in community settings helps people take an important first step toward managing their health and reducing long-term risk.”

The Southern Nevada Health District is actively working to address these disparities by offering free blood pressure screenings and educational events throughout February in accessible community locations, including barbershops, beauty salons, and faith-based organizations.
