Free Bus Travel in Part of South Holland, but Partly in Coaches
Free Bus Rides Offered in Parts of Netherlands Amid Transit Troubles
South Holland Residents Can ride for Free as Qbuzz Scrambles to Address Bus Shortages
Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands – Residents of Alphen aan den Rijn, Gouda, Leiden, and Katwijk will be able to ride the bus for free from December 15th to 22nd.This comes as transportation company Qbuzz grapples with significant delays in the delivery of its new electric bus fleet.
Qbuzz, which took over transportation services in the northern part of South Holland on Sunday, was forced to lease dozens of diesel-powered touring buses to maintain service. The company had initially ordered 140 electric buses from Iveco and 112 from Van Hool. However, Van Hool filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, forcing Qbuzz to seek an option supplier in China’s Yutong.
While the first 50 Yutong buses have arrived, the remainder are not expected until next year. Adding to the complications,Iveco informed Qbuzz of further delays, pushing back the delivery of nearly 100 electric buses.
“We deeply regret these delivery problems, especially as they surfaced so close to the start of our service,” saeid Annemarie Zuidberg, Qbuzz’s general director. “We were misinformed by our supplier, but we are committed to ensuring that all passengers reach their destinations. We are working tirelessly to improve the situation as quickly as possible.”
The use of touring buses has created accessibility issues for passengers with strollers or wheelchairs. These buses also lack real-time information screens and check-in/check-out equipment.
South Holland province expressed its disappointment with the situation. “Our priority is ensuring that passengers can travel according to the published schedule,” said Frederik Zevenbergen, a provincial deputy. “We will not accept any deviations from this.” The province is considering taking action, including imposing fines, as Qbuzz is not meeting its commitment to operate a fully emission-free fleet.
