Free Dental Care: Oklahoma Mission of Mercy in Enid Helps Hundreds

by Dr. Jennifer Chen

The Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM) is currently providing free dental care to residents of Oklahoma in Enid, offering a vital service to those who face barriers to accessing oral healthcare. The two-day clinic, held and , 2026, at the Stride Bank Center, aims to address a significant unmet need within the state.

According to data shared during the event, approximately 43% of Oklahomans did not visit a dentist in the past year. This statistic highlights the challenges many face in obtaining even basic dental care, stemming from factors such as geographic limitations, financial constraints, and lack of insurance coverage. For some individuals, OkMOM represents their only opportunity to receive dental treatment annually.

The clinic operates on a first-come, first-served basis, opening its doors at 5:30 a.m. And ceasing intake around 10 to 11 a.m. No insurance or identification is required, removing common obstacles to care. Volunteers anticipate serving approximately 400 patients each day of the event.

The services offered at OkMOM are comprehensive, encompassing a range of essential dental procedures. Patients undergo an initial screening to determine their most pressing needs and are then directed to appropriate treatment areas, including those specializing in oral surgery, extractions, restorations, and hygiene. Services include cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, and some root canals and partials.

The success of OkMOM relies heavily on the dedication of hundreds of volunteers, including dentists, specialists, hygienists, dental assistants, and general support staff. These individuals donate their time and expertise to provide much-needed care at no charge to patients. Ashton Bryant, a volunteer, expressed the rewarding nature of the work, stating, “I’ve seen people smile today who probably haven’t smiled in years, so that feels pretty cool to be able to volunteer my time to help those people.”

The Oklahoma Mission of Mercy, now in its 15th year, strategically rotates its location across the state to reach underserved communities. Dr. Chris Fagan, event chair for the Enid location, emphasized the importance of this outreach, noting, “One goal of the event is to visit different areas of the state; we’ve been as far west as Woodward. We’ve been as far south as Durant, and there’s just a real need for dentistry in rural areas.”

The impact of OkMOM extends beyond addressing immediate dental needs. Tamara Schriner, a patient who received care at the clinic, shared a deeply personal experience, stating, “I was crying, actually. It’s the first time I’ve smiled, showing my teeth in years. I’m not lying, like years.” This sentiment underscores the profound effect that oral health can have on an individual’s self-esteem and overall well-being.

Ella Summerlin, a volunteer, articulated a core principle driving the mission: “I think that it’s people’s right to be able to have healthy mouths and have just a good experience with the dentist.” This belief reflects a commitment to equitable access to oral healthcare, recognizing its fundamental role in overall health and quality of life.

OkMOM is organized by the Oklahoma Dental Association and Oklahoma Dental Foundation, and is funded through generous donations, sponsorships, and partnerships. The organization has provided $18 million in dental treatment since its inception in 2010, serving over 20,162 patients and performing 124,057 procedures.
