Free screening campaigns serve as a vital defense against rising rates of type 2 diabetes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to a physician working in a Kinshasa hospital. Global health data shows the scale of the challenge, while local clinicians emphasize that early detection and lifestyle interventions are critical to preventing severe complications.

Global Diabetes Estimates and Local Realities in Kinshasa

Worldwide figures published by the International Diabetes Federation in 2024 estimated that 589 million adults aged 20 to 79 live with diabetes, with more than 80 percent of those cases concentrated in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Bienvenu Nzuzi Mbembo, a physician at the Mont-Amba Hospital Center in Kinshasa, stated in an interview reported by the Agence Congolaise de Presse (ACP) that diabetes constitutes a major public health problem requiring aggressive local intervention.

Regional projections highlight the urgency of expanding diagnostic access across the continent. Approximately 72.6 percent of diabetes cases in Africa remain undiagnosed, and the total number of affected individuals could approach 60 million by 2050, representing a 142 percent increase if preventative measures are not implemented. To counter these trends, Dr. Nzuzi emphasized the necessity of integrating routine blood glucose testing into hospital consultations alongside widespread free screening campaigns.

While non-modifiable factors such as age and heredity play a role in type 2 diabetes, clinicians point to modifiable risk factors that individuals can address. Dr. Nzuzi noted that patients can reduce their risk by avoiding obesity, eliminating tobacco and alcohol consumption, managing stress, and adopting a balanced diet low in fat, salt, and sugar while increasing physical activity.

When the disease progresses, medical management centers on therapeutic education regarding diet and lifestyle, medical treatments to stabilize blood glucose levels, and targeted interventions for associated health conditions. Untreated or poorly managed hyperglycemia can lead to acute complications like hypoglycemia and diabetic coma, as well as chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetic retinopathy affecting the eyes, nephropathy affecting the kidneys, peripheral neuropathy affecting the nervous system, and diabetic foot complications.

La seule urgence qui nécessite une intervention immédiate à domicile est l’hypoglycémie, c’est-à-dire une glycémie inférieure à 60 mg/dl This acute drop in blood sugar typically manifests through fatigue, sweating, headaches, and a general alteration in physical well-of-being. In such instances, medical guidance advises immediately providing sugary foods or beverages to the affected person.
