Free Flu Shots for Everyone Starting New Year’s Day
Flu Cases Surge, CDC to Offer Free Vaccines to All Starting New YearS Day
Washington, D.C. – As the flu season ramps up, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a critical expansion of its vaccination program. Starting new Year’s Day, all Americans over six months old will be eligible to receive a free flu vaccine. This decision comes as the CDC reports a concerning rise in flu cases, with the season expected to reach pandemic levels within the next week.
“We’re seeing a significant increase in flu activity across the country,” said CDC spokesperson Sang Shuhui. “This year, we’ve already recorded 327 serious cases, the second highest number in the past decade, and 69 deaths, the highest in the past ten flu seasons.”
Shuhui emphasized the urgency of getting vaccinated, noting that none of the eight individuals who died from the flu in the past week had received this season’s vaccine.
The CDC’s decision to offer free flu shots to everyone comes after a challenging year for vaccination efforts.
“The Guoguang vaccine recall and the impact of recent typhoons have unfortunately led to a decrease in vaccinations this year,” Shuhui explained. “We have approximately 960,000 doses remaining from the initial stockpile, and we want to ensure that every American has access to this vital protection.”
While vaccination rates for seniors (43%) and preschoolers (61%) have shown some progress, they still fall short of the CDC’s target goals of 55% for adults and 65% for young children.
Epidemic prevention physician Lin Yongqing highlighted a recent case involving a man in his 40s who developed severe flu complications despite being relatively young and healthy.
“This case underscores the importance of vaccination for everyone, regardless of age or perceived health status,” Dr. Yongqing said. “The flu can be unpredictable and possibly life-threatening.”
With flu season expected to peak in mid-to-late January, coinciding with the Lunar New Year celebrations, the CDC urges all Americans to take advantage of the free vaccination program and protect themselves and their loved ones.

While vaccination rates for seniors and preschoolers have shown some improvement, they remain below the CDC’s target goals.

“This case underscores the importance of vaccination for everyone, irrespective of age or perceived health status,”
With the flu season expected to peak coinciding with the Lunar New Year celebrations in mid to late January, the CDC urges all Americans to take advantage of the free vaccination programme.
