Alphabet user accounts without a paid subscription will lose access to advanced AI models starting Friday, October 9, 2026. Free users will be restricted exclusively to Flash-Lite, the lightest model in Google’s family, as reported after a change to the company’s help page.
The restriction impacts millions of individuals globally. Alphabet recorded 950 million monthly active users for the Gemini application during the second quarter of 2026, meaning the vast majority of free users will now rely on a system designed to generate fast responses rather than handle prolonged reasoning.

Model Access Changes Under New Pricing Tiers
The updated structure replaces the previous model selection with a strict hierarchy tied to monthly subscription costs. Free accounts lose access to Gemini 3.6 Flash and limited use of Gemini 3.1 Pro, leaving only Flash-Lite with standard usage limits.
The AI Plus subscription costs 4.99 euros per month in France and provides access to Flash-Lite and Flash models, with usage caps set at twice the free tier. However, the Pro model is excluded from this tier. To access the Pro model, users must subscribe to AI Pro at 21.99 euros per month, which unlocks all three base models alongside the Deep Think mode previously restricted to AI Ultra.
The AI Ultra subscription ranges from 99.99 to 219.99 euros per month, offering all models and Deep Think with usage limits five to twenty times higher than AI Pro. These usage limits have been in place since May 17, 2026, for users over 18, and since July 24 for minors. Usage caps across all paid tiers are calculated based on computing power consumed, taking into account request complexity, active functions, and conversation length. These meters recharge every five hours under a weekly ceiling. Certain usages videt le compteur more quickly, such as generating images, videos, or music, launching Deep Research, or choosing the high effort level among the three that Google offers for each model.
Industry-Wide Push Toward Subscription Models
Google joins other major artificial intelligence developers in gating high-performance reasoning behind paid tiers. Anthropic utilizes a similar five-hour tranche system with a weekly ceiling for Claude, while OpenAI restricts free users of ChatGPT to its lighter GPT-5.6 Luna model.
Dan Taylor, vice-president of Google in charge of advertising, denied plans to introduce ads into Gemini during public statements in December 2025 and January 2026, leaving subscription fees as the primary monetization strategy for the application.
