Walgreens to provide Free HIV and STD Testing Nationwide

⁣ Updated June 12, 2025

Walgreens, in collaboration ⁤with Greater than ⁤HIV/STDs and KFF, will offer free ⁣rapid⁣ testing for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C at over 575 stores June 27. This initiative marks the largest National⁢ HIV Testing Day (NHTD) event in⁢ the ⁣U.S.

The free HIV testing programme, supported by more than 415 local partners across⁣ most ⁤states, Washington,⁣ D.C., and Puerto Rico, represents⁢ a ⁣record level of ‍participation⁣ in the 15-year⁢ HIV/STD testing ⁣ partnership. Since 2011, the Greater ‍Than ‍HIV and Walgreens National HIV Community ⁤Partnership ‍has ⁤facilitated over 93,000 free tests through ⁤the in-store NHTD program.

KFF Senior Vice President Tina Hoff emphasized the power of public-private partnerships in reaching individuals with ⁢crucial testing ‍and prevention resources. She noted the program’s role in ⁣expanding awareness‍ of prevention tools like PrEP and doxy-PEP, alongside advancements in HIV treatment.

Rick Gates, chief pharmacy⁣ officer at Walgreens, highlighted the vital ⁣role ⁢of the Greater Than ⁢campaign in⁢ providing accessible data about HIV and STD testing, ‍prevention, and treatment. He added that Walgreens pharmacists receive‍ specialized training to ⁣support patients in accessing necesary care.

Testing will occur in private areas ⁤within⁣ the stores or via ‍mobile ⁣units, with trained counselors providing results in ⁢20 minutes or less. Information on prevention methods and treatment advances ‍will also⁤ be available.

The inclusion ⁢of syphilis and⁢ hepatitis‍ C testing reflects ongoing concerns about high rates of ⁢these STDs,including congenital syphilis.⁢ Donations of over 22,000 rapid tests ⁤from manufacturers like Diagnostics ⁢Direct and ⁣OraSure Technologies support this⁢ year’s expanded free STD testing efforts.

What’s next

With the success of this⁣ year’s activation, Walgreens and ‍KFF plan to continue and ⁤expand ⁣their partnership, aiming to reach even more communities with vital testing and prevention services in the years to come.
