World AIDS Day Events in Simcoe Muskoka
Importance of HIV Testing
World AIDS Day is on December 1. It raises awareness about HIV. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit emphasizes the necessity of HIV testing. The Ontario Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS states that 11% of people with HIV are unaware of their status. This can lead to missed treatment and unintentional spread of the virus.
HIV is a sexually transmitted blood-borne infection. It spreads through sexual activity and sharing drug equipment. It can also be passed from mother to child during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding.
Modern treatments can reduce the virus to undetectable levels. This means it cannot be transmitted to sexual partners. This is known as Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U). For those at risk, taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medicine can lower the risk of contracting HIV.

Additional Testing Options
Free HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection testing is available through health care provider offices, walk-in clinics, and community health centers with an Ontario Health Card. Those without a health card can also receive free testing at Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s sexual health clinics located in Barrie, Midland, Orillia, Collingwood, Elmvale, Gravenhurst, and Huntsville. All services are confidential.
Individuals can also request free home-delivered HIV self-testing through the Gilbert Centre’s Get a Kit program.
Reducing HIV Risk
Knowing your HIV status and that of your partners is essential. Open communication with sexual partners about HIV status can help you make informed decisions. Using condoms or dental dams during sex can also reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
