Freezer Alert: What the Blinking Red Light Really Means for Your Frozen Food

November 2, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Every housewife should know what it means when the red light on the freezer comes on and know how to act immediately. See in the lines below what are the possible reasons why this light turns on.

One of the most important appliances in a home is the freezer. It is also expensive, so everyone needs to know how to maintain it in order to enjoy its services as much as possible. Consequently, it is essential to have an accurate understanding of what happens when the red freezer light comes on.

The purpose of the freezer was to keep food at a very low temperature, preventing bacteria from growing and spoiling. A compressor transports refrigerant through a system of tubes. When the agent takes heat from inside the freezer and releases it outside, the temperature drops.

Possible causes:

The freezer has sensors that constantly monitor the temperature and other variables, and the red light is used to indicate if there is a problem with the temperature inside. Here are some possible reasons why the red light might be on:

The freezer door was not closed properly: If the door is left open, warm air enters and raises the temperature. The red light will turn on when detected by the sensors.

Overfilling the freezer with warm food: If you put warm food in the freezer, it will take longer to cool everything down to the desired temperature and the red light may be on.

Problems occurring with the cooling system: Failure of the compressor, sensors or fan can cause fluctuating temperatures and the red light to come on. In this situation, you need an expert who can identify the problem.

A power cut can cause a temporary rise in temperature and the red light to come on. What temperature should you set for the freezer? Experts agree that the optimum temperature for food storage is below 18 degrees Celsius. A higher temperature would accelerate the change.

How long does it take to keep different foods in the freezer?

  • Meat: can be kept up to 12 months, but the best quality is 6 to 9 months;
  • Vegetables and fruit can stay fresh for 8 to 12 months.
  • Bakery products: last for about three months without losing their qualities.
