Collingwood’s tactical flexibility was on full display as Nick Daicos showcased a surprising defensive prowess, while Fremantle’s Jye Voss delivered a career-best performance in a nail-biting encounter that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Daicos’ Dual-Threat Impact
In a strategic move born from necessity and a belief in his evolving capabilities,Collingwood coach Craig McRae deployed Nick Daicos to a defensive role,a position he hadn’t occupied since his debut season. This decision, made in consultation with Daicos himself, proved to be a masterstroke, highlighting the young star’s remarkable growth and versatility.
“I had a conversation with [daicos] on Thursday or Friday about playing back, and he hadn’t played back since his first year,” McRae revealed. “We spoke about how much of a different player he is now compared to when he was a first-year player – his capability, skill, and all the things to it. I was excited for it.”
The Magpies entered the game with a plan to split the roles between Josh Daicos and Nick, but the dynamic shifted, with Nick spending more time in defense. Though, his influence wasn’t diminished. In a testament to his all-around game, Daicos was unleashed around the ball late in the match, racking up a career-best possession tally.”We went into the game with a [plan for a] bit of Josh and Nick split [between the midfield and defence] and we ended up probably having a bit more Nick back than Josh, but we put him around the ball late and what’s he had, career-best possessions? It was a nice thing to have, knowing we could throw those two magnets around a bit.”
Voss’s Explosive Arrival on the Big Stage
While Daicos was orchestrating from the back half and influencing the midfield, Fremantle’s Jye Voss was making his own indelible mark. the emerging key forward, who had never kicked more than three goals in a game prior to this encounter, shattered his personal best by early in the second term. his notable haul came primarily at the expense of Darcy Moore, before mcrae switched Brayden Maynard onto him.
Dockers coach justin Longmuir lauded Voss’s “outstanding” performance, revealing that the defensive assignment on Moore was a intentional strategy. “I thought he was able to clearly have a big impact on the game,” Longmuir said. “I can’t really talk about his time at Essendon. Sometimes, there’s a squeeze on for list spots, so I’m not sure what happened there … but as soon as he came to the club, he worked his backside off.”
Longmuir emphasized Voss’s dedication and work ethic, dispelling any notions that his on-field exuberance overshadowed his commitment. “A lot gets talked about with ‘Vossy’ [about] his energy and carry-on after goals, but there’s not a player on our list who’s worked harder on his game … this type of performance is reward for effort, on the effort he’s put into his game across, I’d imagine, many years.”
Key Performances and Injury Concerns
The midfield battle was fierce, with Caleb Serong leading the charge for Fremantle as their top ball-winner, amassing 37 disposals, nine clearances, and 16 contested possessions. In the ruck, Darcy Cameron was a standout for Collingwood, proving dominant aerially against Fremantle’s Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson, with support from Mason Cox. Though, Jackson’s strong mark and goal late in the final term proved to be a pivotal moment in the contest.
Looking ahead, Collingwood is set to welcome back Tim Membrey and Tom Mitchell for their upcoming clash against Richmond. However, Fremantle faces a potential blow with midfielder Matt Johnson suffering what appears to be a serious left ankle injury in the final term. “He felt a crack, so he’s on crutches, [which is] not a good sign, but we don’t want to go too early with it,” Longmuir stated grimly. “It’s not looking great for him.”
