Samsung is pre-installing the Webtoon platform on its new Galaxy A37 and A57 smartphones, according to reporting from L’Éclaireur Fnac.
The move integrates the digital comic platform directly into the hardware of these new devices, aligning with a significant shift in how comic content is consumed in the French market.
Webtoon’s Market Influence in France
Digital platforms have become central to the French comic landscape. In 2024, Webtoon represented approximately half of comic sales, maintaining substantial volumes despite an overall decline in sales during that period.
This digital dominance occurs within a broader comic industry that remains a pillar of French culture. As of 2025, nearly half of the French population reported reading comics, positioning the medium as the third most read format in the country.
Fluctuations in the French Comic Market
The industry has experienced notable volatility over the last several years. The market saw a record-breaking boom in 2021, with nearly 90 comic titles sold that year.
Following this peak, the market began to cool. In 2023, the overall French book market experienced a softening of the comics sector, which saw a decrease of 4.4 percent.
Despite this decline, sales levels have remained above the figures recorded before the pandemic. Comics currently account for just over 15 percent of total sales volume within the French book market.
International Rights and Future Projections
While consumption remains high, French publishers have faced operational hurdles on a global scale. Reports indicate that publishers navigated a challenging international rights market in 2024, where total contracts dropped by 2.6 percent to 14,265.
Despite these short-term challenges, long-term financial forecasts for the region remain positive. The comic book market in France is projected to reach a revenue of US$ 1,900 million by 2033.
This growth is expected to be supported by a compound annual growth rate of 5 percent leading up to 2033.
