A 26-year-old man in France has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and seven years of socio-judicial follow-up for a series of rapes of minors, a case that highlights the disturbing intersection of online grooming, sextortion and sexual assault. The Bobigny Criminal Court found Sofiane C. Guilty of blackmailing his victims by threatening to publish intimate photos obtained through deception on Snapchat, ultimately leading to sexual violence.

The perpetrator’s method involved creating a false persona on Snapchat, posing as a young woman named “Kenza,” to lure adolescent boys into sharing sexually explicit images. Once he had obtained these images, he initiated a cruel and calculated blackmail scheme. Victims were presented with a horrifying choice: submit to filmed sexual encounters with him, or risk the public dissemination of their private photos. This tactic exploited the intense fear and vulnerability of teenage boys facing the potential ruin of their reputations and social lives.

One victim, 15 years old at the time, testified that he was repeatedly compelled to meet Sofiane C. At hotels in the Île-de-France region to endure sexual abuse. The boy described being terrorized by the threat of his images being shared and feeling trapped under the constant pressure from the fabricated “Kenza” persona. It was this victim’s complaint that triggered the investigation by the Seine-Saint-Denis territorial security police, leading to Sofiane C.’s identification and arrest.

During the arrest, investigators discovered dozens of videos and images depicting adolescent pornography on the perpetrator’s phone. The investigation ultimately identified four male victims, aged 14 to 17, who had been subjected to sexual assault by Sofiane C. Between 2018 and 2022. Authorities are still attempting to locate additional potential victims, including a possible 12-year-old boy.

The victims, having matured since the events, were able to articulate their experiences during the trial.

Clara Cevik, also representing the civil parties, echoed this sentiment, stating that “everyone was able to express themselves peacefully.” The defense attorney, Jérémy Benhamou, similarly praised the “serene” atmosphere of the trial, which allowed his client to present “the work and efforts undertaken to understand his passage to action.” The sentencing, he argued, acknowledged Sofiane C.’s “sincere awareness” of his wrongdoing.
