Svitolina, Swiatek Advance to French Open Quarterfinals
Elina Svitolina battled back to defeat Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, securing her spot in the French Open quarterfinals. Svitolina, seeded 13th, saved three match points against Paolini, the 2024 runner-up. This marks Svitolina’s fifth quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros.
Svitolina will face Iga Swiatek, the three-time defending champion, in the next round. Swiatek rallied after trailing by a set and a break to defeat Elena Rybakina 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In another quarterfinal matchup,Aryna sabalenka will face zheng Qinwen. Sabalenka defeated Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-3, while Zheng overcame Liudmila Samsonova 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3.
Paolini, seeded No. 4, entered the match on a nine-match winning streak, including a title at the Italian Open.
During the match, Paolini served for the win at 5-3 in the second set but was broken. She then missed two match points at 5-4.
“I still can’t believe this match finished my way… Jasmine was playing really well, and it was really tough. I’m happy I could stay composed and fight ’til the very end,” Svitolina said.
Svitolina has 16 wins on clay this season, leading the tour.
Svitolina addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating that she is motivated to keep the Ukrainian flag flying thru her performance.
Swiatek acknowledged her challenging start against Rybakina. “In the first set, with her playing like that, I felt I did not have a single chance,” Swiatek said. “But I’m happy that I was patient enough to stay in the game.”
“It means a lot. I needed this kind of win to feel these feelings that I’m able to win under pressure,” Swiatek told reporters.
Sabalenka has now reached the quarterfinals in 10 consecutive Grand Slams, a feat last achieved by Serena Williams.
“I am super hungry for this tournament. I want to stay until the very last day,” Sabalenka said.
What’s next
Four American women, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys and Hailey Baptiste, are scheduled to compete in the fourth round.
