Carlos Alcaraz, despite admitting he “didn’t enjoy” his previous round, found his form to defeat Ben Shelton in a captivating match. The four-time grand Slam champion had to bring his best game against the powerful Shelton.
The first set went to a tie-break after both players held serve effectively. Shelton initially gained the advantage, pushing Alcaraz to save three set points amid roaring approval from the crowd, who were captivated by stunning net play.
Alcaraz ultimately clinched the tie-break but faced immediate pressure in the second set. Shelton earned six break points in the opening game, but Alcaraz denied them all and later secured a crucial break to win the set.
Shelton, the 22-year-old from Atlanta, did not back down. After an exchange of breaks in the third set, he saved a break point at 4-4, then seized two set points in the following game, converting the second to put pressure back on Alcaraz.
