Major Australian supermarket chains, including Coles, Woolworths, and IGA, are facing mounting pressure to increase grocery prices as suppliers and farmers cite rising hidden cost pressures and high fuel demand.

According to reporting from The Australian and 7NEWS, suppliers for Coles and Woolworths have flagged upward pressure on costs, leading to urgent calls for price hikes to maintain viability. The Daily Telegraph Sydney reports that prices for fresh food could potentially jump 20 percent within weeks.

Fuel Costs and Producer Demands

The push for higher retail prices is closely linked to production costs. ABC News reports that farmers are urging supermarkets to increase payments for fresh produce as fuel demand remains high.

Retailers have attempted to maintain competitive pricing, but the sustainability of these prices depends on the duration of fuel cost pressures, according to reports regarding supermarket price rises.

Global Food Inflation Trends

The pressure in Australia mirrors broader global trends in food inflation. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service, released in March 2026, shows that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food purchased for consumption at home increased 0.5 percent between January 2026 and February 2026.

Global Food Inflation Trends

As of February 2026, food-at-home prices were 2.4 percent higher than they were in February 2025. The USDA predicts that prices for all food will increase by an average of 3.6 percent throughout 2026.

The USDA’s March 2026 summary findings noted that price changes varied significantly across categories between January and February 2026:

  • Large price increases were recorded for fresh vegetables, beef and veal, sugar and sweets, and nonalcoholic beverages.
  • Large price decreases were recorded for eggs, other meats, and fats and oils.

Long-term Economic Drivers

The current volatility is the result of several overlapping economic shocks. According to NPR, grocery prices have risen 29 percent since February 2020, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Initial price spikes were driven by pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, as consumers shifted from restaurants to preparing more meals at home. This was compounded in 2022 by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which increased food costs globally.

More recent factors contributing to inflation include avian flu, which impacted egg prices, and the implementation of tariffs by President Trump, which have pushed up the cost of imported goods such as coffee and bananas.

These systemic pressures have created significant financial strain for consumers. A summer survey conducted by The Associated Press and NORC found that 53 percent of respondents identified rising grocery prices as a significant source of stress.
