Community Support During Creation
The project took approximately two weeks to complete during a period of notably hot weather. McKeown received notable support from the local community, who regularly provided her with water, minerals, and even soft drinks like Coke and 7Up to help her stay hydrated. Her mother, Meave, also assisted her during the final stages of the painting process.
“It was roasting hot, but the local community were brilliant, they kept buying us bottles of Coke, 7Up and water,” McKeown said. “One of the great things of this job is the chatting to peopel. They tell me stories, and I frequently enough use them as a personal source of inspiration. I’ll frequently enough reference the stories in the next mural that I’m doing.”
A Passion for Public Art
McKeown expressed her deep satisfaction with her work, stating, “I love what I do so it’s never like work to me. I’ve very fortunate to be able to do this.” Her dedication to capturing local narratives through art has made her a valued member of the Carlow community.
